My MiniMed Flex journey: What I wish I’d known earlier

I was convinced that a pump without a screen would be a dealbreaker.
After living with type 1 diabetes for 16 years and trying several insulin pump systems, I was used to looking directly at my pump. So, when I first heard that the MiniMed FlexTM system was controlled through a phone, I wasn’t sure it would work for me.
I'm Lynda — a MiniMed employee, a millennial and a mom. The MiniMed Flex system is the latest step in my diabetes journey, and it has genuinely surprised me.
Here's what I wish I had known before making the switch to MiniMed Flex — and why I'm glad I did.
1. Smartphone control gives you more freedom than you think
When I first heard that the MiniMed Flex pump had no screen, I was convinced I wouldn't like it. After spending real time with the system, I can honestly say: I was wrong.
As a millennial, my phone is rarely far from reach. Once I adjusted to managing my system through the MiniMed app, it quickly became second nature.
Now, I can use my phone to:
✅ Check my glucose levels at a glance
✅ Bolus for a meal without digging out my pump
✅ Monitor my Time in Range (TIR) discreetly, wherever I am
The app is intuitive and easy to navigate. What I thought might feel inconvenient has become one of my favorite parts of the system. I can take care of what I need to do from the phone already in my hand – and then get back to whatever I was doing.
2. I no longer have to dress around my pump
The MiniMed Flex is smaller and lighter than my previous insulin pump. Combined with phone control, that has opened up a whole new world of wearing options.
Gone are the days of wearing bike shorts under dresses just to hide my pump. Now I can:
- Tuck it into my bra comfortably and discreetly
- Leave it stashed away and still manage my system
- Dress the way I want to dress — including flowy summer dresses without the extra layers 🌸
The MiniMed Flex system makes wearing an insulin pump feel far more natural than I ever expected. That may sound like a small change, but for anyone living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, the flexibility in how you wear the pump makes a real difference in daily confidence and comfort.
In fact, when I looked for photos to include with this story, I had a hard time finding anywhere the pump was visible. It was always tucked away. That might be one of the best endorsements I can give.
3. Waterproof† design means less diabetes worry
I didn't realize how much mental energy I spent protecting my insulin pump from water until I switched to MiniMed Flex.
At the pool, I was thinking about where my pump was and trying not to get splashed. If it started raining, I was looking for somewhere dry. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but it was one more calculation taking up space in my mind.
With the waterproof design, I have one less thing to think about. My son is used to hearing me say, "I have my insulin pump on — don't splash me!" Now, I don’t have to interrupt the fun if I don’t want to. (He doesn't need to know that the waterproof MiniMed Flex pump has changed the rules. 😅)
This really clicked for me when my friend and I got caught in the rain at a theme park. In the past, I would have run for cover to keep my pump dry. This time? We just got in line for the next ride. No stress. No panic. I knew my pump was safe — even if my socks were not. 🧦
That moment felt really significant. I wasn’t asking the people around me to be more careful. I wasn’t rearranging the moment around my diabetes technology. I could just live my life.
From skeptical to sold: My final thoughts on the MiniMed Flex system
The MiniMed Flex system has brought a renewed sense of freedom to my diabetes management – freedom that I didn’t realize I was missing. I can manage my diabetes from my phone, wear my pump more discreetly and spend less time thinking about where it is or how to protect it.
I expected the no screen on my pump to be the thing I liked the least. Instead, it has become part of what makes MiniMed Flex fit so naturally into my life. It’s still doing a really important job—I just don’t have to think about it quite as much. And honestly, that means more than you know.
† At the time of manufacture and when the reservoir and tubing are properly inserted, your pump is waterproof. It is protected against the effects of being underwater to a depth of up to 8 feet (3.6 meters) for up to 1 hour and 45 minutes (105 minutes).
