MiniMed Flex system review: Jaime’s first 30 days

Meet Jaime

I’m Jaime — a MiniMed employee and type 1 diabetic since age 3, who has worn an insulin pump for the last 20+ years.

Living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) means existing inside a constant blur: juice boxes and glucose tablets, insurance claims and pharmacy runs, mental math and midnight wake-ups soaked in sweat, calloused fingers and pump alerts, tears and triumph. It's easy to get lost in it all.

I’m also an active person, which can add an extra layer to managing my diabetes. I love working out, hiking, swimming, playing tennis, and taking our rescue dog Jack for long walks. So, when I got the chance to try the MiniMed FlexTM system, I was excited — and ready to share every high and low. Pun intended.

Here are six things I LOVE about the MiniMed Flex system and a few things that took some getting used to.

1. The easiest setup of my life

In my more than 20 years of pump therapy, I've never set up a new system so quickly.

I completed my initial software update, entered my settings, and inserted my Simplera SyncTM sensor in about 30 minutes. I used to have to carve out at least an hour, but now that everything is done via the app, it’s SO much faster.

Starting a new pump can feel like a big event. This time, it felt surprisingly simple.

2. The new MiniMed app changes everything

I love that I can now do everything through my phone.

No more pulling out my pump when I’m wearing a dress or when I'm in a place or situation where I want to keep it under wraps! I can discreetly use my MiniMed app on my phone to deliver boluses, check my sensor readings, and make any adjustments I need. This came in especially handy on a recent trip when I was wearing a lot of dresses! Instead of trying to reach for my pump, I could use the phone already in my hand.

I also love the fact that I have more control over how I customize things now. I can turn sound and vibration features on or off, set different daytime and nighttime limits, and truly customize the experience to my life. Hooray!

3. The design and weight

First, it's adorable. It's SO much lighter than my MiniMedTM 780G system and so sleek!

Second, I know this sounds like a small thing, but during the last 30 days, something that has made such a difference is that the MiniMed Flex pump doesn’t flip the waistband of my yoga pants during workouts

If you're a woman who wears an insulin pump, you know exactly what I mean. My MiniMed 780G was notorious for pulling forward on waistbands. After 30 days of hikes, strength-training sessions, pool time, and dog walks — the MiniMed Flex pump stayed secure every single time.

Plus, I’m loving the different colored belt clips. I’m currently rocking lavender! 💜

4.   True independence

I don’t need my husband anymore...for sensor changes, that is.

If you read my MiniMed 780G review, you know that inserting the GuardianTM 4 sensor was a real challenge for me to do solo. I wasn’t flexible enough to do it myself, so I needed my husband on deck every Sunday to help. Over the years, it caused a bit of a scheduling challenge when one of us went out of town. With Simplera Sync, I can do ALL of my sensor insertions BY MYSELF. I no longer have to coordinate schedules or ask someone else for help. After years of relying on another person for that weekly step, that independence is life changing.

5.   An algorithm I trust

I’m the type of diabetic that has a lot of blood sugar fluctuations based on stress, activity levels, and hormones. Before SmartGuardTM technology, I was constantly chasing highs before a big work presentation or lows after workouts. The constant ups and downs were exhausting — mentally and physically.

The MiniMed Flex has that same trusted SmartGuard algorithm I relied on with the MiniMed 780G system, now in a smaller, phone-controlled design. It’s quietly giving me little tiny corrections to bring me back into range. It’s automatically adjusting insulin dosing when I miscount the carbs (looking at you, Asiago Bagel 🥯). It’s adapting for the weird, slight spikes I get when I lift weights. And I still continue to see those coveted straight lines on my Time in Range graph just like I did with MiniMed 780G system.

Because of that, I feel great. I feel stable. The blood sugar roller coaster is in the past  and I’m loving the way I feel now. The system may look different, but the SmartGuard technology I trust is still working quietly in the background.

6.   The best conversation starter

If I had a dime for every time someone asked about the MiniMed Flex pump in the last 30 days, I could retire. People were genuinely amazed that this tiny-but-mighty device is a fully functional insulin pump. Every question gives me the opportunity to talk openly about living with type 1 diabetes — and to show how much diabetes technology has evolved since I started wearing a pump 20 years ago.

My learning curve

It wouldn’t be a proper review if I only talked about the good things, right?

Here are a few things that took some adjustment during my first 30 days:

  • Phone dependency — As much as I love having everything controlled through the app, I struggled for about 2 weeks to remember to keep my phone with me. I would find myself needing to bolus and looking up and say “Um, has anyone seen my phone?” That resolved after about 14 days, but I did have to explain to our teenage daughter why Mom gets to break our “No phones at the dinner table” rule. Good news is that even if I step away from my phone, the system continues to deliver insulin based on my settings as long as my sensor and pump are connected to each other.
  • Phantom pump-checking — I miss being able to use my pump as a watch. I caught myself reaching for the Flex pump to check the time or my SG reading at least 40 times in the first few days. There's nothing displayed on the device. It took a while for that to sink in!
  • Learning the alert tones — At first, the high and low alert tones were hard for me to distinguish — or I may simply be tone deaf. 😄 This may just take more time, but regardless, the chirps alert me when I need to check the app and more importantly, take action.

My experience after 30 days

The MiniMed Flex system has genuinely improved my daily life with T1D. The freedom, the design, the algorithm, the independence — it adds up to something that feels meaningful, not just incremental.

It gives me the SmartGuard technology I already trusted, but in a system that feels lighter, more discreet and more personalized. I can manage it from my phone, wear it more comfortably while I’m active and change my sensor without relying on someone else.

None of those things eliminates the work of living with diabetes. But together, they make that work feel less visible and easier to carry.

For me, that is what progress looks like: technology that handles more of the complexity of diabetes while fitting more naturally into the life I want to live.
