Alerts and notifications
The InPen™ app will send criticial alerts and notifications to your smart device to notify you of important actions needed. Notifications will differ depending on whether you are connected to a MiniMed CGM or not.
When connected to a MiniMed CGM:
- Missed Dose — this alert appears when the InPen app detects that the sensor glucose (SG) is rising quickly and there is no recent dose of rapid-acting insulin logged within the logbook.
- Correct High Glucose – this alert appears when your glucose is above your glucose target and the dose calculator would recommend a correction dose of rapid-acting insulin to get you back to your set glucose target. This alert considers your current sensor glucose and any active insulin to determine if a correction dose is needed.
- Long-acting Reminder – when no long-acting insulin has been recently logged, a reminder appears at your scheduled dose time that it is time to take your long-acting insulin dose.
- Replace Cartridge Reminder – this reminder occurs 28 days after a cartridge is replaced to help you remember to replace your insulin.
When not connected to a MiniMed CGM:
- Missed Dose — this alert occurs at the end of your configured meal time window when no rapid-acting insulin dose was logged within the set meal time window.
- Check Glucose 2hrs After Dose – this reminder helps you remember to check your blood glucose after each rapid-acting insulin dose and at bedtime.
- Long-acting Reminder – when no long-acting insulin has been recently logged, a reminder occurs at your scheduled dose time that it is time to take your long-acting insulin dose.
- Replace Cartridge Reminder – this reminder occurs 28 days after a cartridge is replaced to help you remember to replace your insulin.

How do I set up therapy settings?
How do I set up therapy settings?
Before using the dose calculator, you will need your personal therapy settings from your healthcare provider. You can find these on your InPen prescription form. If you are not sure what your settings are, check with your physician.
- Once you have your therapy settings, open the InPen app.
- Tap Settings on the home screen.
- Tap Therapy Settings and read the safety message. If you are ready, tap Proceed.
- Tap on each line to set the correct value.
- Once you have selected the correct value, tap the green check mark to save or the red X to cancel.
The values that must be set are:
- Maximum Calculated Dose – This is the maximum calculated dose that your healthcare provider determines is safe for you. If a single dose recommendation or the total of recent doses plus the recommendation exceeds the maximum calculated dose setting, an alert will be displayed. Refer to the instructions given by your healthcare provider.
- Duration of Insulin Action – This is the amount of time that insulin is actively lowering your blood glucose. It is used to calculate active insulin and the blue circles on the timeline.
- Time of Day Settings – By default, this is disabled and target blood glucose, insulin-to-carb ratio, and insulin sensitivity factor are constant throughout the day. By sliding the switch to the right, you can set these parameters to four different values throughout the day. To disable this feature, slide the switch back to the left.
- Time of Day (If Time of Day Settings are enabled) – When enabled, these select the start time for each new set of parameters. Each day at the time selected, the parameters in the column beneath it will be active until the next column’s time is reached. Tap the time to adjust it. Note that the times must be in order and cannot overlap.
- Target Blood Glucose – This is the blood glucose value you are trying to achieve. When entering a blood glucose value into the dose calculator, it will recommend insulin or carbs to return to this target value.
- Insulin Sensitivity Factor – This is the amount your blood glucose is lowered by 1 unit of insulin.
- Insulin to Carb Ratio – This is the number of grams of carbohydrates covered by 1 unit of insulin.

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED: For the Dose Calculator to work safely and accurately, it is critical that all rapid-acting insulin be logged. Doses taken with the InPen™ will be automatically logged, but if you take rapid-acting insulin from a source other than your InPen it must be logged manually. Too much insulin may cause hypoglycemia.
IMPORTANT: Your mobile device must be set to the current time to ensure that manual doses are logged correctly and your Active Insulin (IOB) is correct. Incorrect time settings could result in unsafe recommendations, which could lead to severe hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, or injury.
To enter a manual dose:
- Open the Logbook.
- Tap Log Dose. You can log rapid-acting insulin or long acting insulin.
- Tap Dose Amount and enter the number of units taken.
- Tap Dose Time and enter the time when the dose was taken. By default, the time is set to the current time, but it can be adjusted to any time within the last 24 hours. Note: If you have traveled across a time zone, adjust and enter the dose time as though it was taken in your current time zone.
- Tap Save or to exit without saving a dose, tap Cancel.
Meal Therapy modes describe how you decide how much insulin to take with meals. The InPen system offers three different options designed to meet your diabetes management needs: Fixed Dose, Meal Estimation, and Carb Counting. These therapy settings increase in precision as you progress from Fixed Dose to Meal Estimation to Carb Counting.
During the setup of your Therapy Settings, select the Meal Therapy mode that your healthcare provider prescribed. If you do not know your Meal Therapy settings, contact your healthcare provider.
NOTE: Your Meal Therapy mode is part of your prescription. Once you have selected your Meal Therapy mode, you cannot increase the precision of your Meal Therapy type without contacting our support team.
- Fixed dose - Dose recommendations are based on a fixed amount of insulin to take with each meal type (e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack). The dose amount may be different for each meal. The dose calculator will consider your current glucose and Active Insulin, and will adjust the recommendation, if needed, to bring the glucose level back to target.
- Meal Estimation - Dose recommendations are based on an estimate of the size of each meal, relative to carbohydrates (e.g. low, medium, high carb meals). The dose may be different based on meal type and size. The dose calculator will consider your current glucose and Active Insulin, and will adjust the recommendation, if needed, to bring the glucose level back to target.
- Carb Counting - Dose recommendations are based on the exact amount of carbohydrates within each meal. Doses are calculated using an insulin to carb ratio. The dose calculator will consider your current glucose and Active Insulin, and will adjust the recommendation, if needed, to bring the glucose level back to target.
To change your Meal Therapy mode:
- Tap Settings in the lower right corner of the InPen app
- Tap Therapy Settings, then proceed after reading the disclaimer
- Tap Meal Therapy and select your prescribed Meal Therapy mode
